Early on I made my way into the world of art via the many venues available in the City, like the MMA and MOMA. I loved to quietude they offered, and the opportunity to engage with personal touchstones which reached beyond time. But what also interested me were people, the strangers on the subways and in the streets, as well as the familiar faces of my family. And with my Kodak Holiday Flash I recorded many a fuzzy face. After obbtaining my BFA and MA in art, I raised my three incredible children, and spent many years teaching art, and learning from all of my students. And all along the way, I have always created art... This site is dedicated to the many kids who took the time to share their worlds with me. From Freddine, my earliest student in the Hudson Valley, to Josh who shocked me out of my complacency with his story of foster care, to Ben and Theresa who turned their domestic abuse experiences into searing poetry, and Andrea with her deep blue eyes and hesitant smile, to Andy and Ray for blooming despite their dangerous neighborhoods, and to the many other profound and amazing kids who are all heros in my eyes. And we all know how much the world needs heros... © 2007 Susan Herdman |
